+ Flexibility

Integrating Flexible Furniture into K-12 Classrooms As technology continues to evolve and change the method of pedagogy, so must the furniture in the classroom adapt. Current technology allows classrooms to be wireless, where mobility and portability are increasingly important and 1:1 initiatives are established for every student to be equipped with a tablet or laptop device. Providing flexible furnishings in a classroom enhances the use of this technology and allows for teachers to transition students into arrangements for collaboration, instruction, and assessment in a matter of seconds – not minutes. SGA worked closely with Horry County Schools in the design of the Early College High on the Horry-Georgetown Technical College campus in Conway, SC. The integration for technology was paramount for the facility, and the furnishings followed in this effort of promoting flexibility. Science labs traditionally require a significant square footage for a facility, but by evaluating the actual needs of today’s science lab/classroom space, SGA was able to reduce the footprint significantly with mobile/flexible furniture. The imagery below depicts how the room easily transitions into different configurations, with the gas and sinks positioned along the exterior walls for the necessary laboratory stations. The adjustable-height tables have a lab-surface top and locking casters for durability and accessibility.   Steelcase is a leader in K-12 research to create furniture that is functional and flexible for the classroom, providing our designers with valuable information to better inform our clients in selecting furnishings for their spaces. These sample classroom models from Steelcase show how the same furnishings can be rearranged into various configurations to facilitate instruction. Project Highlight: JICP Playground & Spray Play

James Island County Park Playground & Spray Play Charleston County Parks & Recreation Commission Charleston, SC The James Island County Park Playground required the removal of an existing playground built in the 1980s. This renovated playground includes cutting edge, modern, up-to-date equipment that meets all regulatory requirements. The design has a nautical theme which is reflected in the surfacing layout and color. A “parents plaza” is situated between the 2-5 and 5-12 play areas allowing parents to keep a watchful eye on very young and older children. A new sidewalk connection between the two existing parking areas is included. The JICP Spray Play was recently completed in 2014, which allows a fun area for children and families to cool off on hot summer days. A variety of spray equipment was used within the design, and shade awnings were installed between the two spray play areas for parents to watch. A bench-height wall was also installed around the facility to provide additional seating around the perimeter. SGA Services: Land Planning, Landscape Architecture  [slideshow_deploy id=’2378′]...

Project Highlight: Stables Park

Waccamaw Regional Tennis Center & Soccer Complex at Stables Park  Georgetown County Parks & Recreation Pawleys Island, SC Stables Park is part of the Georgetown County Parks Redevelopment Program, and this park is both an active and passive facility. The site includes a Carolina Bay wetland area, as well as open space for a tennis and soccer complex. Taking advantage of the site’s unique characteristics, SGA planned a passive interpretive area with trails and boardwalks through the Carolina Bay, accented by open meadows, lagoons, and an adjacent dog park. The trails will also connect to the Bike the Neck system, also designed by SGA. The Tennis Center offers 20 courts, including one stadium court and six Quick Start courts. Originally, an existing horse stable was to be renovated and converted into the Tennis Center, but the County decided to build a new clubhouse facility adjacent to the existing building. This clubhouse holds the pro shop and check-in desk, restrooms and locker rooms, office and conference space, and a warming kitchen. The Soccer Complex includes five 225’ x 360’ fields and associated support facilities and concession stand, as well as a playground and picnic area.
